Do It Yourself Steam Cleaning

What is the best way to steam clean carpets?

Most homeowners have heard of the many advantages of steam cleaning. Steam cleaning, or hot water extraction is recommended by many carpet manufacturers. It is typically the preferred cleaning method for many consumers. Many people decide to take on the task themselves. Here are some of the facts about steam cleaning your carpet.

Steam Cleaning Machines There are many commercially available steam cleaning machines designed to work on carpet. While they are not all exactly the same, they often have several of the same features. These steam cleaning vacuums are designed to apply a cleaning solution along with extremely hot water.

The water is then removed using the same machine. This process, while called steam cleaning, is actually a form of hot water extraction. Using these types of machines for cleaning carpet can be a good option for removing dirt and some stains, with a few exceptions.

Performance Problems Generally speaking, the smaller steam cleaning vacuums don’t perform as well as the larger, more expensive machines. The smaller ones do not have much impact on the carpet. This can make using them both difficult and time consuming, as you may need to go over the same area multiple times in order to have any results.

Another problem that homeowners run into is leaving too much cleaning solution behind. Most commercially available steam cleaning machines are simply not as effective at removing all the cleaning solution. This is very problematic, as it can lead to additional soiling.

When residue is left behind after cleaning, it works like a magnet to attract dirt. Your carpets will appear dirty again very quickly if the cleaning solution isn’t fully removed during the extraction process. Do-it-yourself steam cleaners can also leave behind too much water.

This is a problem in more ways than one. You will have to wait longer for the carpet to dry, leaving the area unusable for an extended period. Even worse, if the carpet is saturated and takes too long to dry, it can cause problems with mold or mildew.

Once this occurs, the carpets will need to be cleaned again and dried completely. Many of the problems that occur when using at-home steam cleaning machines are due to basic user error. Using too much cleaning solution or too much water can easily happen without the right kind of training or experience.

Other problems come from the fact that the equipment is not as effective at the extraction process as professional grade equipment. That’s why it is best to leave steam cleaning to professionals.
