Cleaning Grass Stains From Carpet

How to Remove Grass Stains from Carpet

Grass stains are some of the most frequent stains that professional carpet cleaners see in carpet. While there are easy remedies for grass stains in fabrics, homeowners are often left to try to figure out how to clean them in carpet on their own.

Grass stains are tricky because they contain natural plant dyes. When left in the carpet fibers too long, they can cause a permanent stain to occur. This can be prevented with the right cleaning techniques.

Dealing with Grass Stains Grass stains are most commonly seen around entrances and in play areas. They often occur after a yard has been mowed. The freshly cut grass is tracked in on shoes and gets ground into the fibers of the carpet.

It can also occur in play areas when grass is on children’s clothing and ends up on the carpet. In order to prevent grass stains, you can institute some control measures to contain it. The best measure is to use walk off matting. Mats should be placed on the exterior and interior of each entrance. For an added precautionary measure, have rule of no shoes in the house.

Even with the best prevention, stains can still take place on your beautiful carpet. Fortunately, there are things you can do after the staining has occurred. Your first step in cleaning the stain should always be to vacuum. It is essential to remove any excess grass prior to attempting stain removal.

The last thing you want to do is to cause further staining by blotting the remaining grass into the carpet. After vacuuming, the next step is to try using a mild laundry detergent. Laundry detergent is good at removing grass stains on fabrics. However, the key is to not use too much.

It can be very difficult to remove if the carpet becomes saturated with this type of cleaning agent. Mix just a quarter of a teaspoon with two cups of cold water. Use a towel to blot the stain with the mixture. Blot from the outside to the inside of the stain to avoid spreading it further. Remove the detergent from the area by blotting again with clean water.

You may need to repeat the process in order to fully remove the stain. If this method fails to provide results, you can try using rubbing alcohol. Apply the rubbing alcohol with a towel and then blot the area with cold water. For additional assistance with stain removal, contact a professional carpet cleaning company.
