From time to time, you may experience a variety of problems with your chosen type of flooring. Whether you have hardwood, tile or carpet, occasional issues are bound to occur eventually. Dealing with maintenance issues and problems that arise is essential if you want to get the most out of your flooring.

Carpet is an excellent floor covering that can be extremely durable when it is properly cared for and maintained. However, one of the problems that can arise is carpet snags. Carpet snags need to be fixed immediately in order to prevent additional damage.

What Causes Snags?

A variety of events can cause carpet snags. You can eliminate some of these by taking preventative measures. Looped carpet types are generally more vulnerable to carpet snags. The carpet fibers can catch on furniture or other objects that are moved across the surface of the floor. When the loops are caught, they can pull out of the base of the carpet.

Carpet snags can also occur when the vacuum cleaner is used on the wrong setting. If it isn’t set for the right pile height, the beater brush can pull at the fibers and loosen them. This can cause significant areas of carpet snagging. One of the most important carpet cleaning tips is to use the right setting for the type of carpet you have.

Dealing with carpet snags

When you see a carpet snag, it is essential not to pull it. Often people think that the problem can be solved by just pulling out the one offending thread. However, this can have a ripple effect. If one thread is pulled, it can loosen the threads in the same area. It can also cause a hole that is visible. Once a hole is in the carpet, it can extend with just regular wear and tear.

The first step for fixing a snag is to trim the area. If it is higher than the rest of the carpet, simply trim off the area that is sticking out. There are times when carpet snags will call for professional repair. In some cases, where snags are serious enough, the carpet may need to be replaced. Deciding if it should be repaired or replaced can be a challenge.

Cost effective solution

When the carpet is only worn and damaged in a few areas, it is usually more cost effective to have it patched. Small holes are much easier to patch than larger ones. It is necessary to find matching carpet to make the patch. Sometimes remnants of the exact same carpet can be obtained.

Caring for your carpet includes regular carpet cleaning and maintenance. It also means taking care of issues as they arise to prevent them from becoming bigger problems.
