All About Carpet Pads The kind of carpet pad you choose can have a huge impact on how well your carpet performs over time. Yet many people don’t spend as much time selecting the carpet pad as they do their carpets. In part, this is due to the fact that there are so many different types to choose from and it can be difficult to know what to get. There are two major factors to consider when choosing a carpet cushion: thickness and material. Here’s a guide to help you pick out your next carpet pad.

Material There are several different types of materials available, each with their own benefits. Rubber is easy to install. It also holds moisture well. The downside is that it compresses more quickly than some other materials.

Bonded urethane is another option, and is often used in both commercial and residential applications. It can come with a moisture barrier for added protection and can be quickly installed. Felt fiber is created with both synthetic and natural fibers, and works best for thick pads. Some cushions also have added antimicrobial protection in the material.

Thickness The key is to use the right thickness of padding for your type of carpet. It is more complicated than one might think. Perhaps somewhat counter-intuitively, the thickness of the cushion should actually be decreased in areas of heavier traffic. Hallways, stairwells, or other high-traffic areas should have a thinner pad of around 1/4 inch.

While it should be thin, it should also be dense. This will prevent problems like unraveling fibers. Other areas of the home can have a thicker pad of up to 1/2 inch. In fact, the Carpet Cushion Council recommends a maximum thickness of only 1/2 inch for most residential carpet pads. Too thick of padding can cause rippling.

Making Your Decision If you want to extend the life of your carpet, the most important thing to take into consideration is the manufacturer’s recommendations. The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends that the carpet pad conform to the specific product being installed.

Carpet manufacturers provide guidance on everything from the type of pad to choose, how to deal with stains, and how frequently to have your carpets professionally cleaned. Choosing the right padding will not only make it last longer, it will also help it feel softer and reduce noise. Your carpet retailer should also be able to provide you with guidance for finding the right cushion.
