And as the weather grows colder, many people spend more time indoors. All these factors work together to create the potential for more carpet spills and stains.

The fact is, carpet stains occur all year long. However, there are several stains that carpet professionals hear about more frequently in the fall season. The following are some of the most common fall carpet stains with tips for how to clean them.

Caramel

Caramel apples are a fun fall treat. They are also a nightmare on carpet. Hot caramel can be very difficult to remove from carpet fibers. When it dries, it forms a tight bond to the fibers. If it is cleaned too vigorously, it can be damaged.

The best thing to do is to treat the stain immediately. Remove as much of the excess as possible without distressing the fibers. Vinegar works well to help dissolve the remaining caramel. Mix one part white vinegar to one part water. Spray on the area and clean the stain by blotting with a cloth.

Coffee

Sipping coffee is a favorite fall activity for many, making coffee stains a frequent fall offender. Many of the best stain remedies come directly from items that may already be in your pantry. Club soda is one of the best stain remedies available.

Simply pour club soda on the affected area and blot away the stain. Continue pouring and blotting with a cloth until the stain has lifted and transferred onto the cleaning cloth. Keep in mind that if you drink coffee with cream or milk, the best way to clean the stain is through steam cleaning. The hot water will ensure that the bacteria from the milk is destroyed.

Mud

As the weather gets wetter, mud tracks become more common. There are several commercially available cleaning agents designed to clean mud. For a homemade solution, you can mix 1/4 teaspoon liquid dishwashing detergent and one cup of water.

Stain Fighting Tips

Whatever method you choose, it is important to test your method of choice on an inconspicuous spot to make sure that it doesn’t cause any discoloration. Remember to always blot the carpet, never scrub. Scrubbing your carpet can ruin the carpet fibers and can also cause the liquid to soak through to the carpet pad. If you need additional assistance removing stains, contact a professional carpet cleaner. They can help restore your carpet to its former appearance.
