Ultimate Guide: Clean Carpet Stains Effectively

All carpet stains are bad. Treating carpet stains is one of the main objectives of most cleaning services. However, some stains are worse than others. These stains are difficult for even seasoned carpet cleaning professionals.

One of the characteristics that makes a stain stand out is color. Certain colors are far more difficult to remove than others. One of the hardest colors to remove is red. Fortunately, removing red stains from carpet is possible. Follow these tips to get the best results.

Types of Stains

The way you treat the stain largely depends on the substance that created the stain. The reason all red stains are difficult is because the way that the color blends with the color of the carpet fibers. However, there will be different removal methods based on the chemical structure of the stain.

For example, red paint stains should not be treated the same as red wine stains. It is important to first determine the type of stain that is on the carpet. If you are able to do this, proceed to clean the stain based on whether it is water-based or oil-based.

Water-Based Stains

As with all types of stains, the best way to treat it is to remove it immediately. When left to dry, the stain becomes much harder to treat. Use a clean white towel or heavy duty paper towels to absorb the liquid. Work from the outside of the stain to the middle.

Blot gently but do not use too much pressure. Rubbing the stain can push it deeper into the fibers of the carpet. Apply a water-based spot removing cleaning agent and follow any directions as indicated. Alternatively, try a natural cleaning agent. There are several natural remedies for stain removal.

Club soda is one such natural method that has long been known for its ability to remove most red stains. The carbonation and sodium work to combat the stain. Apply the club soda to the stain and blot with paper towels. Repeat this process until the stain is removed. Be careful not to saturate the carpet. Allow it to dry completely once you are finished with stain removal.

Oil-Based Stains

The first step is to remove any excess oil through blotting. Next, apply an absorbent material such as cornmeal. Cornmeal works well to soak up residual grease on the surface of the carpet. After applying cornmeal or another type of absorbent, you will want to give it time to fully absorb as much of the grease as possible.

Scrape the absorbent with a brush to remove it from the fabric. Vacuum the area several times to remove the absorbent material. Next, use an oil-removing cleaning agent and follow the instructions as directed.

Steam Cleaning

Professional steam cleaning can help dissolve and lift out most stains. Contact a professional if you need help removing any type of stain from your carpet.
