Upholstery Fabric Guide

Upholstery Fabric

The professional upholstery cleaner faces a multitude of challenges with upholstery fabric.

That is because there are literally thousands of combinations of fabric types that may be used on upholstery.

Carpet installation on the other hand, is limited to just a handful of fabric choices. While carpet is constructed from a few fibers and blends, upholstery is usually composed of more than one type of fiber and a multitude of blends.

Whereas carpet is durable and designed to tolerate abuse, upholstery is delicate and designed more for appearance and beauty, than for handling and wear. So, much more expertise is need for handling modern furniture, especially the expensive high-end types.

Problems with upholstery fabric

Potential problems with upholstery cleaning may range from bleeding to fading, shrinkage, browning and fiber distortion or texture change. One might think that high priced furniture would tend to reduce or eliminate those problems. Paradoxically, the more expensive the upholstery fabric is, the more prone it will be to damage by uninformed upholstery cleaners.

Carpet and upholstery cleaners should be able to identify different kinds of upholstery fabric. They should also be familiar with their special characteristics so that they can implement appropriate principles of upholstery cleaning chemistry.

This discussion will focus on the different types of modern upholstery fabric that may be available today.

Categories of fabric

There are three main categories of fabric: Cellulosic (vegetable), Protein (animal) and Synthetic (man-made).

Different types of fabrics

Cellulosic

Cellulosic fibers are made from cotton, linen, or jute. This was the first type of fiber used by man to make cloth. But although it has largely been replaced by synthetic fibers, it is still the most popular class of upholstery on finer modern furniture.

Cotton

This is a very elegant and versatile fabric. The fibers are extracted from pods of the cotton plant and weaved into yarn. It is strong and very absorbent, so it feels comfortable against the skin.

This type of fiber is easily dyed by many different methods, so beautiful patterns may be created.

Another advantage is that cotton can tolerate relatively high cleaning temperatures, and certain kinds of oxidizing or bleaching agents.

However, cotton must be handled carefully because there are several disadvantages.

Firstly, since it is so absorbent, it is easy to get stained. Secondly, it is prone to cellulosic browning, which occurs on the oxidation of cellulose, especially when it is unrefined, as with Haitian cotton.

Next, some bleaches like strong hydrogen peroxide may cause the fibers to be degraded and become brittle and discolored. And its absorbency may also lead to shrinkage on exposure to water during the cleaning process.

Linen

Linen is like cotton in many ways.

It is produced from the stem or stalk of the flax plant. The fibers are grey, brown, or tan colored. Linen is also absorbent and temperature resistant and its tensile strength increases when it gets wet.

Main drawback is its sensitivity to sunlight. Prolonged exposure to sunlight will result in a weakening of the linen fibers, so this type of furniture must be placed away from open windows.

Linen is not as easily dyed as cotton, and is more sensitive to acids and bleaching compounds. It is also less durable than cotton and needs more gentle agitation during the cleaning process. A soft bristle horsehair brush is appropriate.

Jute

Jute is made from the stalk of the jute plant found mostly in India, Pakistan and South America. It is a coarse fabric that is rarely used in upholstery. And it is mostly used for appearance.

This fabric is relatively inexpensive, fairly stable, strong and elastic, but is prone to browning, shrinking and brittleness. It is also readily susceptible to mold damage.

Protein Fibers

The only two protein fibers commonly used in furniture upholstery are wool and silk.

Wool

When wool gets wet, it gives off the characteristic sheep smell because it is really just sheep’s hair.

Many people tend to clean wool infrequently. They will say that it just doesn’t need cleaning because it doesn’t look dirty. That is because wool tends to hide dirt because of the special properties of the fibers. The soil is still there though. It has nowhere else to go.

Wool is relatively strong and resistant to abrasion. It is an excellent insulator and is flame resistant. And perhaps one of the most characteristic of wool is its affinity to dyes. Beautiful hand-woven patterns can be generated with wool fabric.

Wool is an expensive fabric which requires special care and maintenance.

Care must be taken when cleaning wool, because it is sensitive to acids and alkalis.

Cleaning chemicals must be almost pH neutral. Cleaning temperatures must also be kept below 150 degrees F.

Wool is easily damaged by some oxidizing and reducing agents, especially halogens like chlorine. Bleaches will destroy the fabric in an instant.

Despite all this, wool is a popular fabric for those who can afford it.

Silk

Silk is a very beautiful fabric that is obtained from silkworm cocoons. It is extremely expensive and usually, only found in high end homes.

Silk absorbs dyes easily, so it comes in a wide range of vibrant colors. It is strong and elastic, but susceptible to abrasion from vigorous agitation, so special care is required during cleaning.

If silk is to be wet, the solution should be neutral because it becomes brittle when exposed to acids or alkalis.

Like wool, silk will be destroyed by bleach. Careful use of very dilute solutions of oxidizing or reducing agents may be appropriate.

Dry cleaning is recommended for many kinds of silk fabric, but again, it depends on the blend. All fine fabrics should be carefully tested in an inconspicuous place before general application of any cleaning solvent.

Synthetic or manmade fibers

Synthetic fibers are made by blending a combination of chemicals and transforming the products into fibers.

Nylon

Due to its special properties, nylon is the most popular and commonly used synthetic fiber, for carpet or upholstery.

Nylon is durable, strong, lightweight, resilient, and abrasion resistant. It is easily dyed, and resistant to heat, mildew, and molds. Its resilience allows it to spring back in place when crushed, making it the fabric of choice for most carpet installations.

Although nylon is easily stained, it also has a low soil absorbency which makes it easier to clean with professional carpet cleaning methods.

That is one of the reasons why it is so popular.

Polyester

Polyester is more commonly used as a clothing fabric but may be found in many upholstery fabric blends.

It is fairly strong, resilient, and resistant to abrasion, but it is nonabsorbent, and hard to dye.

This makes it attractive to oily soils and more difficult to clean than similar synthetics.

Rayon

Rayon is one of the first synthetic fibers used in upholstery fabric blends. It is made from cellulosic components of cotton and wood pulp.

Rayon is less sensitive to sunlight than cotton and is very absorbent and quite lustrous in appearance. But it gets weakened when wet, and loses shape when stretched, so is not a very popular choice for upholstery fabrics, except in blends.

Acrylic

Acrylic looks like wool and does not show stains and abrasions easily, so it is a popular component of wool blends. It is colorfast, resistant to heat and cleans up easily.

However, it is not very resilient and is prone to crushing and nap reversal.

Olefin

Olefin is a popular upholstery fabric. It is extremely lightweight, strong, difficult to stain and moisture resistant. Olefin is color fast so it can be wet cleaned but does not respond very well to dry cleaning.

Conclusion

These are the major types of upholstery fabric being used on furniture today. Hundreds, if not thousands of blends are being produced to suit every imaginable taste and preference.

It is therefore essential for professional upholstery cleaners to test these fabrics carefully before deciding which upholstery cleaning methods should be used along with Fabric stain repellant or fabric protector.

The wrong choice could prove to be very costly.

What should I do to maintain my carpet after its been cleaned?

To maintain the cleanliness and longevity of your carpet after it has been professionally cleaned, here are a few tips:

  1. Vacuum regularly: Regular vacuuming helps to remove dirt, dust, and debris that can accumulate on the carpet surface. Aim to vacuum at least once a week, or more frequently in high-traffic areas.
  2. Address spills and stains promptly: If any spills or stains occur, it’s important to clean them up as soon as possible. Blot the area with a clean cloth or paper towel and avoid rubbing, as it can spread the stain. If needed, use a mild carpet cleaner or a mixture of water and vinegar to treat the stain.
  3. Use doormats and shoe removal: Placing doormats at entryways can help reduce the amount of dirt and debris that gets tracked onto the carpet. Encourage family members and guests to remove their shoes upon entering to minimize dirt and stains.
  4. Avoid excessive moisture: Limit the amount of moisture that comes into contact with your carpet. Wipe up any spills promptly and avoid over-wetting the carpet during cleaning.
  5. Schedule regular professional cleanings: Periodic professional cleanings are essential to maintain the freshness and appearance of your carpet. We recommend scheduling a professional cleaning at least once every 12-18 months, or more frequently for high-traffic areas.

Following these maintenance practices will help extend the life of your carpet and keep it looking its best.

Why should I have my upholstered furniture professionally cleaned?

Having your upholstered furniture professionally cleaned offers several benefits:

Deep Cleaning:

Professional cleaners use specialized equipment and techniques to deeply clean upholstery, removing dirt, allergens, and contaminants that regular home cleaning methods might miss.

Extended Furniture Life:

Dirt and grime can wear down and degrade upholstery fibers over time. Regular professional cleaning can help extend the life of your furniture by removing these abrasive substances.

Stain Removal:

Professionals have the tools and expertise to remove tough stains without damaging the fabric. They can identify the type of stain and the type of fabric to determine the best cleaning method.

Health Benefits:

Upholstered furniture can harbor allergens like dust mites, pet dander, and pollen. A professional cleaning can help reduce these allergens, improving indoor air quality and potentially benefiting those with allergies or respiratory issues.

Odor Removal:

Over time, upholstered furniture can absorb odors from pets, spills, smoke, and other sources. Professional cleaning can help neutralize and remove these odors, leaving your furniture smelling fresh.

Safe Cleaning Methods:

Professionals train to recognize different types of upholstery materials and know which cleaning methods and products are safe and effective for each. This reduces the risk of damage or discoloration.

How to get dog pee out of carpet?

Removing dog urine from carpet can be a challenge, especially if it has set for a while. However, with the right approach, you can effectively remove the stain and odor. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Blot the Fresh Stain:

If the urine is still wet, use paper towels or a clean cloth to blot up as much of the urine as possible. Do not rub, as this can spread the urine and push it deeper into the carpet fibers.
Place a thick layer of paper towels on the wet spot and press down with your feet or place a heavy object on top to help absorb the moisture.

Prepare a Cleaning Solution:

Vinegar and Baking Soda: Mix equal parts of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray the affected area generously. Let it sit for a few minutes, then sprinkle baking soda over the area.
Commercial Enzymatic Cleaners: These are specifically designed to break down the proteins in urine, eliminating both the stain and odor. Brands like Nature’s Miracle or Simple Solution are popular choices. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Apply the Cleaning Solution:

If using the vinegar solution, after sprinkling baking soda, let it fizz and sit for a few hours or overnight if possible.
If using an enzymatic cleaner, apply as directed on the product label.

Blot and Rinse:

After the solution has had time to work, blot the area with a clean cloth to remove any excess moisture.
Rinse the area with cool water and blot again to remove the cleaning solution. This step is crucial to prevent any residue from attracting dirt in the future.

Vacuum:

Once the area is completely dry, vacuum to restore the carpet’s texture and remove any leftover baking soda or residue.

Check for Remaining Odor:

If you can still smell urine, it may have soaked into the carpet padding or even the subfloor. In such cases, you might need to treat the area multiple times or consider hiring a professional carpet cleaner.

Prevent Future Accidents:

Remember, always test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area of your carpet first to ensure it doesn’t cause discoloration or damage.

How to get dog pee smell out of carpet?

If you’ve managed to remove the visible stain from dog urine but are still battling the lingering odor, here are some steps and methods to help you eliminate the smell:

Enzymatic Cleaners:

These cleaners contain enzymes that break down the proteins in urine, which are the primary cause of the odor. Brands like Nature’s Miracle, Simple Solution, or Rocco & Roxie are popular choices.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Typically, you’ll want to saturate the area to ensure the cleaner reaches the carpet padding where urine might have soaked.

Vinegar and Baking Soda:

Mix equal parts of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. Spray the affected area generously.
Let it sit for a few minutes, then blot up as much moisture as you can.
Once the area is mostly dry, sprinkle baking soda over it. The baking soda will help absorb and neutralize odors.
After letting the baking soda sit for a few hours or overnight, vacuum it up.

Hydrogen Peroxide:

Professional Cleaning:

If home remedies aren’t effective, consider hiring a professional carpet cleaning service. They have specialized equipment and solutions that can deeply clean and deodorize carpets.

Odor Neutralizers:

There are commercial odor neutralizers available that can help mask and eliminate pet odors. These can be sprayed or sprinkled on the affected area.

Air Out the Room:

Replace the Carpet Padding:

In extreme cases where the urine has deeply soaked into the carpet padding or subfloor, you might need to replace the padding in that particular area. This is a more drastic measure but can be effective in completely eliminating deep-set odors.

Prevention:

Remember, always test any cleaning solution on a small, inconspicuous area of your carpet first to ensure it doesn’t cause discoloration or damage.

What neutralizes dog urine?

You can neutralize dog urine using a combination of methods that address both the stain and the odor. Here are some substances and methods that can neutralize dog urine:

White Vinegar:

White vinegar is a natural acid that can neutralize the alkaline salts present in dried dog urine stains. Mix equal parts of white vinegar and water and apply it to the urine stain. Allow it to sit for a few minutes, then blot up the moisture.

Baking Soda:

Baking soda is an alkaline substance that can neutralize acidic components in urine. It also acts as a natural deodorizer, absorbing odors. After treating a urine spot with vinegar, sprinkle baking soda over the area, let it sit for a few hours or overnight, and then vacuum.

Enzymatic Cleaners:

These cleaners contain enzymes that break down the proteins and uric acid crystals in urine, effectively neutralizing the stain and odor. Popular brands include Nature’s Miracle, Simple Solution, and Rocco & Roxie. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Hydrogen Peroxide:

Hydrogen peroxide can help neutralize the odor of dog urine. However, it can also bleach or discolor certain materials, so always test a small, inconspicuous area first. Mix a solution of ½ cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide with a teaspoon of dish soap and apply to the urine stain. Allow it to sit for a while, then blot and rinse.

Dish Soap:

Mild dish soap can help break down the uric acid and remove the stain. You often mix it with other solutions, like hydrogen peroxide, for a more effective treatment.

Lemon Juice:

The citric acid in lemon juice can help neutralize the alkaline components of dog urine. Mix equal parts of lemon juice and water and apply to the stain. However, be cautious, as lemon juice can also bleach certain fabrics.

Cornstarch:

Cornstarch helps absorb fresh urine, thus reducing the amount of urine that requires neutralization. Sprinkle cornstarch over a fresh urine spot, let it sit for a few hours, then vacuum.

Water:

Rinsing the affected area with water after treating it with any of the above solutions can help wash away the urine components and any cleaning residues.

When dealing with dog urine, it’s essential to act quickly. The longer the urine sits, the harder it will be to neutralize and remove the stain and odor. Always test any solution on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn’t cause discoloration or damage.
